All that it takes for Corruption to Prevail is for Professionals to Compromise their Ethics

On receiving an email today from the Actuarial Society of South Africa reminding South African actuaries of their professional and ethical responsibility to act in the public interest, I am reminded of a takeout from the book “On Tyranny – Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century” by Timothy Snyder (2017) that for corruption to prevail all that is needed is for professionals to compromise their ethics. This was the case in so many examples of democracies that turned into dictatorships and kleptocracies in the last century! Let all professionals take heed of this and always remember our duty to protect the public interest in everything that we do! If we don’t who will?
